Arthroscopic Surgery (Shoulder & Knee)
ARTHROSCOPY SURGERY
Arthroscopy is a minimal invasive surgical procedure which involves examination and treatment of problems inside a joint. In this procedure a small incision (about 1 cm only) is made on the patient’s skin and then an arthroscope (similar to endoscope) which has a narrow tube like structure and has a camera and light source in it, is inserted into the patient’s joint. With the help of arthroscope a magnified view of inside the joint can be seen on a larger screen and then after visualizing problem, other small incisions are made by which small surgical instruments are inserted and then damaged part is treated.
ACL RECONSTRUCTION SURGERY
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) attaches the shinbone to the thigh bone. Tearing this ligament is common among athletes, especially those engaged in cutting sports like soccer, football, basketball, rugby and lacrosse. ACL surgery is usually recommended and appears to provide the greatest long-term solution for many athletes.
In an ACL reconstruction, a new ligament is built from a graft that is provided from either a donor or from the patient themself. Surgery is often performed 3 to 4 weeks after a torn ACL. This gives time for a preoperative exercise program to work on quadriceps activation and strength, full knee range of motion and swelling reduction. ACL surgery lasts about One to one and half hours, and patients usually Get discharged after overnight stay in hospital.
SHOULDER ARTHROSCOPIC SURGERY
Shoulder arthroscopy is a surgical procedure used to visualize, diagnose, and treat various problems inside the shoulder joint and in the space surrounding the rotator cuff. This is done through small incisions that allow the insertion of specialized instruments. The arthroscopy is a pencil-sized tool that contains magnifying lenses and a light source. This is attached to a small camera that projects a clear image of the joint on a TV monitor, allowing your surgeon to see all the structures inside your shoulder.
Arthroscopic shoulder surgery is used to treat a variety of common shoulder problems, including bursitis, tendonitis, arthritis, impingement, rotator cuff tears, labral tears and shoulder instability. Usually patients who undergo shoulder arthroscopy have not responded well to other treatment options including rest, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, and steroid injections.
As with any injury, your doctor will be the best source of advice on the appropriate treatment method for your situation.
BENEFITS OF ARTHROSCOPIC SHOULDER SURGERY
Benefits of arthroscopic surgery compared with older open surgical techniques include:
1. Minimal scars
2. Overnight hospital stay
3. Decreased pain and swelling
4. Improved motion
5. Quicker functional recovery
6. Fewer risks and complication
BANKART REPAIR
1. Shoulder is a ball and socket joint and glenoid is the socket part surrounded by fibrocartilaginous supporting tissue called the labrum. Bankart lesion is an injury where labrum separates from its bony attachment at the glenoid rim and arthroscopic Bankart repair is done to fix the condition.
2. Recurrent shoulder dislocations interfering with security of the joint and creating debilitating pain and discomfort for the patient, usually warrants arthroscopic repair of Bankart lesion.
ADVANTAGES OF ARTHROSCOPIC BANKART REPAIR
1. Arthroscopic surgery is minimally invasive surgery done through a small puncture in the shoulder and that is why it is often referred to as keyhole surgery.
2. The amount of damage in keyhole surgery to soft tissues, bones and muscles is remarkably lesser.
3. Postoperative pain is considerably lesser.
4. Surgical scars are very small.
5. Procedure is done as Day Care or Overnight Stay Surgery
6. Return to work and resumption of routine functional activities is quicker.
ROTATOR CUFF REPAIR
Shoulder joint is protected by a group of muscles and tendons which are called as Rotator cuff. They cover the shoulder like a cuff which helps you to lift and rotate your arms smoothly. These tendons can be torn or get pinched by the bones around them due to severe falling on your arms or injury and overuse. Rotator cuff tear can be a very painful condition and hindering in your normal functioning of shoulder joint.
Rotator cuff repair is the surgical repair of torn tendons and can be done either as an open procedure or via shoulder Arthroscopy. Surgery can relieve your pain and restore function to your shoulder.
The rotator cuff consists of muscles and tendons that hold the shoulder in place. It’s one of the most important parts of the shoulder. It allows you to lift your arm and reach up. An injury to the rotator cuff, such as a tear, may happen suddenly when falling on an outstretched hand or develop over time due to repetitive activities. Rotator cuff degeneration and tears may also be caused by aging.
If your rotator cuff is injured, you may need to repair it surgically. This may include shaving off bone spurs that are pinching the shoulder, or repairing torn tendons or muscles in the shoulder. Surgical techniques that may be used to repair a tear of the rotator cuff include arthroscopy, open surgery, or a combination of both. The goal of rotator cuff repair surgery is to help restore the function and flexibility of the shoulder and to relieve the pain that can’t be controlled by other treatments.
